Quail in Montana?

I tried to find this quail on the internet, but it looks like either a Gambel’s Quail or a California Quail and neither of them are supposed to range here in western Montana. If anyone has better information, comment or send me an email. They are really cute and I see quite a few on the roads and in the pastures near our Bitterroot Mountains. They move too fast for me to get a better photo so far and usually are in coveys or groups.

  1. I have lived in the Fred Burr drainage for over 31 years. Never had quail on my acreage until about 5 years ago. The specie of quail (with the topknot)you have photos of, appear to be the “Valley Quail”,not the Gambel Quail. I’ve been told that they have been in this area for about 10 years, due to a private individual who bought several pair and released them. Our recent string of very mild winters has contributed to their increase in numbers. Thankfully they are not able to be hunted in the state of MT. I love to hear them “calling” each other in the evening at dusk.

I feel so fortunate to live in this area…….just today I have seen in this area: a Bald Eagle; Valley Quail; Ringneck Pheasant, several wild turkey; many WT Deer, And a few weeks ago, I saw a River Otter……only the 2nd time in the 31 years I’ve lived along FB Creek have I seen an Otter. Also earlier this year, I saw a flock of Huns on one of the gravel roads in this area. CARPE DIEM.

  2. This is pretty interesting. Do you have any more info about them? Do you still see these birds? Quail are my favorite bird and i wish they inhabited mt.
